Data, Data Everywhere! Understand Your Data & Maximize Test Coverage

David Guimbellot, Orasi Software, Inc.

About the Topic

It’s critical that you measure your test cases against the most appropriate conditions to ensure that all of your requirements are tested. In order to maximize the quality of a solution, the testing process needs to provide the best coverage possible. In this session, we will focus on the issues and risks of poor data coverage.

Understand why the process of Test Data Management (TDM) should be broken down into a cycle of phases, which follow after the environment setup: - Data analysis - Data pools creation - Data pools validation - Data delivery - Continuous improvement. Learn why data coverage analysis is critical in identifying what data is required to ensure that faults related to code interaction are discovered during the test phases and not in production. Learn how TDM tools can be used to measure data coverage and improve it.

Key Learning Objectives
  • Understand the issues and risks of poor data coverage and why production data isn’t enough
  • Explain why TDM should be broken down into a cycle of phases
  • Provide context for where and when to use TDM tools to measure data coverage and improve it
  • Layer data coverage in with your code, path and requirement coverage
About the Speaker

David Guimbellotis currently a consulting VP at Orasi Software, where he is responsible for the oversight and strategic planning for the test data management and continuous delivery teams.

Dave was a Senior Manager at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts from 2007 to 2011 when he earned the importance of data quality. He ran a QA team of 80+ people while he also managed a usability design team. However, the most educational part of his role was being the commander for priority 1 support incidents to the composite application which ran the booking, reservations and lodging systems. During the extended 24x7 support of a major release, he discovered how many production incidents could have been avoided with better data quality practices
