The single most important predictor of success in agile is the ability to control work entry. All teams, whether truly cross-functional, faux-agile, or a single function team (such as coding or testing only teams) need to learn the art of saying “no” to uncontrolled work entry. Learning the art of saying no is especially important for testers that often do not feel empowered as equals on some teams. Teams and organizations need to obsess about controlling work entry. Unplanned work entering willy nilly into the value flow should be RARE. The work entry process needs to be tuned to be able to deal with these types of items without causing undue disruptions to the flow of work. Note: There will be two hands-on exercises to help attendees understand why work entry is not someone else’s problem.
Tom Cagley is a senior agile coach at Hyland Software. In the role of agile coach he actively seeks out process problems across Hyland’s development environment and facilitates solving problems. Mr. Cagley has over 20 years experience in the software industry. He has held technical and managerial positions in different industries as a leader in software methods and metrics, quality assurance and systems analysis. Mr. Cagley is a frequent speaker at metrics, quality and project management conferences. His areas of expertise encompass management experience in methods and metrics, quality integration, quality assurance and the application of the SEI’s CMMI® to achieve process improvements. Mr. Cagley is the president of the International Function Point Users Group. He also is an active podcaster, hosting and editing the Software Process and Measurement Cast (www.spamcast.net) and blogger (www.tcagley.wordpress.com).
